Caol Ila 10 Year (1992), Dun Bheagan Casks 7236-38

Whisky: Caol Ila 10 Year (1992), Dun Bheagan Casks 7236-38

Country/Region: Scotland/Islay

ABV: 43%

Cask: Hogshead

Age: 10 Years (Distilled 1992, Bottled 2003)

Nose: Tar and lumber with resin and burning pitch, subtle coastal brine pushed against citrusy lime and herbal mint; oddly creamy at times with occasional bursts of clay and earth.

Palate: Light-bodied, gentle wood smoke and coastal brine, resin, and tar lingered in the background with a metallic nibble; limes and ashtrays with wood chips and a touch of musty earth; charred beetle leaf, according to the wife.

Finish: Medium to long with charred citrus and wood, a touch of salt.

Score: 6 (78)

Mental Image: Beach Combing with a Cigarette in the Morning

Narrative & Notes: Mild and gentle, this 90s Caol Ila hit differently than some of the standard fare of the 2000s, with more earth and hints of something creamy on the nose. There were still plenty of familiar themes— classic maritime, citrus, and herbal elements were all present with an amped-up level of wood and smoke. The adjusted abv made this dangerously easy to drink. Otherwise, there was nothing that really set this apart from other Caol Ila; it was just a lovely little thing to sip on— it was a casual and relaxing whisky.

Overall, solid fare and a fun little diversion with the Caol Ila of yesteryear.
