Flashback to the 80s with this 2004 Bowmore. Surely the most 80s of the Feb 16 2004 casks that SMWS has released, many of which have a faint tropical floral quality to them. This was brimming with it, like barbecuing next to a blooming hibiscus tree while sipping on a passion flower tea and picking up the scent of your neighbors laundry— hints of lavender, oh my. Lovely stuff— good thing im a child of the 80s and love floral elements in my whisky. Do you ever taste colors or music with whisky? I find synesthesia an absolutely fascinating quirk of our minds— sometimes our perception of things bleeds into other areas so that numbers, colors, dates, music etc. can have a taste, a vibe, or some difficult to describe connection. To me, the best Longmorn taste like the sunset and give off this kind of city pop-lofi color palette. This was my website art for Longmorn last week; we’ve got the turnip, platypus, and three cats enjoying the sunset with a mobile whisky bar. That’s the life. New treats have arrived! The journey from one island to another on the other side of the globe is neither quick nor direct sometimes. There is some joy to be found in waiting— the sweetness of anticipation. I cannot wait to open and share these bottles… but until then, more anticipation to savor. Something delightfully mellow and friendly, if not a bit austere, for a Friday night. This was the only full sized @wmcadenheads bottle we grabbed during our spell in Campbeltown at Springbank— we just couldn’t spring for the 1k ardbeg we also eyed— not until we win the lottery anyway. Until then, this will do nicely. With a hurricane on the way next week and classes done for this week, it seemed like an appropriate time to part with the disco cats. One of my all time favorite labels and of course it’s from @dornochdistillery. Here’s to staying safe and stocking up on the kitty food for our disco crew at home. Another new whisky book for the shelf! This memoir is as hilarious as it is dark— between the antics of a young man and the hijinks of whisky makers from the 60s to 90s are stories of alcohol abuse and suicide. The tone is light but the window on an industry in the throes of professionalization, the trauma of war, and the shifting demographic patterns is fairly unvarnished. Honestly a wonderful peek into life at distilleries from Aultmore to Banff, Ladyburn, Dailuaine, Springbank, and more. Website art for the Kiwi malt week— why are the Kākā attacked the clock tower building at Otago University? No idea, but I loved how close the Dunedin gardens and aviary was to the university. We had a good run of cold sunny days during my spell in the town, so I took just about every chance I had to go wonder the gardens and visit the birds— and when I wasn’t doing that I was downing coffee near the clock tower building. Malts from the southern hemisphere— I’ve finally gotten around to posting my review from New Zealand, with a hefty focus on the malts produced by the New Zealand Whisky Co at their wee operation inside Speight’s brewery. I love these small format bottles; they were perfect for tasting and enjoying during my spell in Dunedin. Apologies for the limits of my truly limited photography skills— no technology can save truly poor technique! One of the odder wedding party gifts I ever got was this wooden 6-pack holder from Etsy. The bride and groom are no longer together (even at the ceremony everyone knew it was only their first— and it was, but both seem happy now, so it worked out), but I still have this memento. I don’t drink a lot of beer, or have a reason to cart it around in a wooden carrier, and I only just found a use for it last year— to carry a stash of “bath whiskies” for the wife. So here was her selection tonight— a funky 19 Year #Ledaig from @dornochdistillery.
