Jura 29 Year, Lady of the Glen
Whisky : Jura 29 Year, Lady of the Glen
Country/Region : Scotland/Islands
ABV : 42%
Cask : Refill Hogshead
Age : 29 Years (Distilled 2 April 1991, Bottled 6 Oct. 2020)
Nose : Honey, herbs, and woody resin. An old pot of vanilla and cream, pickled science jars, and coconut lotion on the beach. Disoriented, the nose moved toward resinous wood and velvet in an antique or curio shop.
Palate : Light and delicate with and herbal profile of subtle smoke and sea. Honey and wood resin appeared with salty rotting vegetation, smoke infused velvet furniture, and maritime florals in the background. Faint fish sauce arrived with sea asparagus and the slightly bitter end of a teapot.
Finish : Lingering notes of herbal tea and honey.
Score : 3
Mental Image : Curio Shop Jar of Pickled Blobfish
Notes : An old Jura that definitely still brought the funk. After nearly three decades in a refill hogshead this took on quite a bit of woody influence which balanced nicely against some of the odd maritime aspects. Despite a light mouthfeel, this still packed quite a bit of flavor, and the finish lasted for a good long time. The flavor profile really did not come together for me, while it was really interesting, it was not to my taste— I like funky profiles, but this was not my kind of funk. The maritime and subtle smoke notes did not really pair with some of the creamy vanilla that kept trying to come through.
Overall, this was fun to try and really interesting even if it was not my favorite. This dram really embodied the divisiveness of Jura; it was absolutely sure to please some, while disgusting others.
