Tomatin 10 Year, Exclusive Malts

Tomatin 10 Year, Exclusive Malts

Whisky : Tomatin 10 Year, Exclusive Malts

Country/Region : Scotland/Highlands

ABV : 57.4%

Cask : Ex-Sherry

Age : 10 Year (Distilled 10 Aug. 2004, Bottled Aug. 2014)

Nose : Rich dried fruits, butterscotch, and blondie bars.  Burst of sweet dried dates and figs with brown sugar, creamy nougat, toffee, and butterscotch.  Lighter fruit notes of pear cider and dried pineapples emerged with more time.

Palate : Medium bodied with rich dried fruits, brown sugar, and herbal tobacco.  The first sip revealed golden syrup covered pears, slightly overripe stone fruits, golden raisins, and sultanas.  The sweetness balanced against mild herbal notes of tobacco, sweet tea, and lacquered wood.

Finish :  Lingering notes of dried fruit with a mild dryness.

Score : 6

Mental Image : The Sultana of Agrabah

Notes : It took me a few years to get around to actually writing up my review of this bottle.  Tomatin has never really been my favorite and, while I was happy to buy this bottle to share with friends, I just never felt pulled toward this sherried malt.  It may have taken me a while, but this was actually quite nice.  This sat on the borderline of being a real sherry bomb; it was dominated by sherry cask driven notes, but it never felt sticky or overdone.  There was a remarkable balanced on this dram that I really appreciated.

Overall, this was another lovely malt and another reason to mourn the end of Exclusive Malts.  This was not my style— too sweet and a bit hot without the kind of malty complexity to really keep it interesting, but it was still quite tasty.
