This Ben Nevis was bottled for Aloha Whisky Bar in Ikebukuro by an unstated independent bottler— I assume Rudder or someone based in Japan. The label features some lovely art of Leʻahi (Diamond Head) and Waikiki beach. To be upfront, I do know the owner of the bar and consider them a friend. While I do not think that biased the review, I think it is worth keeping in mind.

Notes: Big tart tropical fruits, wet sand, and a kiss of salt— this sat right on the beach with a bit of dewy grass, sea shells, and musty tidal flats. It was fresh and dank at different turns as pomelo, grapefruit, and pineapple wafted over damp vegetation with hint of musty decay. Medium to light-bodied on the palate, the flavors started with a citrusy pop, kiss of brine, and dissolved minerals. More malted milk balls and candies sat further in with a bit of kinako dusted mochi. Driftwood, coconut cream, and white pepper appeared at times, contrasting or complementing the tropical vibes. The finish was long with a gentle peppery bite, wet sand minerality, citrus pith, and subtle toffee.

Conclusion: Wow— this was one of the most fun 1996 Ben Nevis I have poured. It had the standard fruity profile, though leaning toward tart fruits rather than juicy sweet ones, alongside some of the funkier and mustier elements of the malt. Few of these 1996 whiskies have any of the earthier and dirtier character of Ben Nevis, and though it was not a top note or strong element here, it was present and provided a wonderful contrast. Overall, more interesting than many of the others I poured— I doubt this bottle would last long on my shelf.
